The World’s Largest Caves

The largest caves are among the most popular tourist attractions in the world. Here are the largest caves from around the world.

I have seen four caves in my entire life and those experiences were truly fantastic and worth remembering. If given the chance again, I would like to see more caves.

Son Doong Cave – Vietnam

Son Doong Cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam is the world’s largest cave. The cave also contains a large fast-flowing underground river. It was discovered in 1991 and is five times larger than the Phong Nha Cave. Son Doong biggest chamber is more than 5 km in length, 200 m in height with 150 m width.

Deer Cave - Malaysia

Deer Cave is the world’s second largest cave. It is located near Miri, Sarawak in Borneo, Malaysia. It is a show cave attraction of Gunung Mulu National Park and is also known as Gua Payau or Gua Rusa by the local Penan and Berawan people. The cave is said to have been received its name because of the deer that come to the cave to lick salt-bearing rocks and shelter themselves. According to a survey conducted in 1978, Deer Cave has a width of 169 m and a height of 125 m in one section that passed through the mountain for a distance of 4.1 kilometers. It is connected to Lang Cave, another show cave within the park. The main entrance of Deer Cave was measured at 146 m.

Eisriesentwel – Austria

The Eisriesentwel is an amazingly beautiful natural limestone ice cave in Werfen, Austria. The name is German for "World of the Ice Giants". The cave is inside the Hochkogel Mountain in the Tennengebirge section of the Alps. This spectacular European cave is the world’s largest ice cave with a length of over 42 km. it is a popular tourist destination receiving about 200,000 tourists annually.
