The Smallest Towns in the Philippines

Perhaps one of the most popular towns in the country is the Municipality of Pateros, a First-class Municipality in Metro Manila. This small town is famous for its duck-raising industry and especially for the production of the famous Filipino delicacy called “balut” Pateros is the only municipality and the smallest, both in population and in land area, in Metro Manila, but it is the second most densely populated at around 27 thousand people per square kilometer after Manila.

 Municipalities are classified according to income. Towns with the largest income are classified as first class while municipalities with the least income are categorized as sixth class.

Here’s a list of the smallest towns in the archipelago according to population.

1.) Kalayaan


Kalayaan is considered as the smallest municipality. It used to have a population of more than 300 civilian but due to the tension going on at the Spratly’s, the population dropped to more than 60 people. This 5th class municipality is located in the province of Palawan. It is composed of only one barangay known as Pag-asa.

2.) Ivana


Ivana is a town located in the province of Batanes, the country’s smallest province. This 6th class municipality has a population of 1,181 people. It is the 2nd smallest municipality.

3.) Uyugan


With a population of 1,203 people, the town of Uyugan is the 3rd smallest municipality in the Philippines. This town in Batanes is a 6th class municipality.

4.) Carasi


The 4th smallest municipality in the archipelago based on population is Carasi. This 5th class municipality is located in the province of Ilocos Norte. According to the latest census, it has a population of 1,435 people.

5.) Sabtang


Another small town located in Batanes is Sabtang. This 6th class municipality has a population of 1,465 people according to the latest census. It is the 5th smallest town.

6.) Adams


Adams, like the town of Kalayaan, is composed of only one barangay. It is a 5th class municipality in Ilocos Norte. Its population according to the latest census is 1,522 people.

7.) Mahatao


Most of the smallest towns in the Philippines are located in the province of Batanes. The 7th smallest town is Mahatao, a 6th class municipality with a population of 1,539 people according to the latest census.

8.) Dumalneg


Dumalneg is a 5th class municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte. Like Adams and Kalayaan, it is composed of only one barangay also. With a population of 1,716 people, it is the 8th smallest town in the Philippines.

9.) Daguioman


The 9th smallest town in the country is the 6th class municipality of Daguioman. This town, with a population of 1,916 people, is located in the province of Abra in Cordillera Administrative Region. It is composed of 4 barangays.

10.) Bucloc


The 10th smallest town in the archipelago is the 6th class town of Bucloc in Abra province. It is composed of 4 barangays with a population of 2,227 people according to the latest census.
