Desiderata (Mga Inasam na Bagay)

Desiderata
(Mga Inasam na Bagay)

Translated in Filipino by: Nobert Soloria Bermosa

“Desiderata” is one of the most popular prose poems in the world. “Desiderata” is Latin which means “desired things” It was written by Indiana writer Max Ehrmann. It exhorts the reader to "be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be", and to "keep peace with your soul". "With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams," wrote Ehrmann, "it is still a beautiful world."

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
Humayong may kapanatagan sa gitna ng ingay at kaabalahan,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
at tandaang may nakalaang kapayapaan sa katahimikan.

As far as possible without surrender
Hangga't maaari na walang pagsuko
be on good terms with all persons.
sikaping makibagay sa lahat ng tao.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
Sambitin mo ang ‘yong katotohanan ng payapa at malinaw;
and listen to others,
gayundi’y makinig ka sa’yong kapwa,
even the dull and the ignorant;
maging ang mapupurol at mga mangmang;
they too have their story.
sila rin nama’y mayroong kuwento.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
Iwasan ang mga hambog at mga agresibong tao;
they are vexatious to the spirit.
sila ay magpapagalit sa espiritu.

If you compare yourself with others,
Kung ihahambing mo sa iba ang sarili,
you may become vain and bitter;
maaari kang maging hambog at mapaghinanakit,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
sapagkat palagiang may mas nakahihigit at may mas mababang tao sa’yo.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Ipagdiwang mo ang iyong mga nakamit gayundin ang ‘yong mga mithiin.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
Panatilihin ang pagkawili sa iyong gawain, gaano man kaaba,
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
tunay itong kayamanan sa pabago-bagong kapalaran ng panahon.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
Palagiang lakipan ng pag-iingat ang bawat mong pakikipagdaupang-palad,
for the world is full of trickery.
Sapagkat ang mundo’y punong-puno ng panlilinlang.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
Gayunpama’y huwag mong ikabulag ito sa kabutihang naririyan din;
many persons strive for high ideals;
marami ang nagpupunyaging matamo ang matatayog na mithiin,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
at sa lahat ng dako ang buhay ay puno ng kabayanihan.

Be yourself.
Ipakita ang tunay na sarili.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Lalo’t higit, pagsinta’y huwag ikubli.
Neither be cynical about love;
Maging sa pag-ibig huwag maging mapagduda;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
dahil sa harap ng katigangan at napawing tiwala,
it is as perennial as the grass.
gaya ng damo ito'y habampanahong naririyan.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
Malugod na tanggapin ang mga payo ng panahon,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Habang magiliw na isinusuko ang mga bagay ng kabataan.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
Kalingain ang lakas ng kalooban upang magsilbing kalis sa biglaang kasawian.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Subalit huwag pagurin ang sarili sa masasamang pangitain.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Maraming pangamba'y dulot ng pagkapagod at kalungkutan.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
Sa likod ng kasiya-siyang kaasalan,
be gentle with yourself.
maging marahan sa’yong sarili.
You are a child of the universe,
Ikaw ay isang anak ng sansinukob,
no less than the trees and the stars;
tulad ng mga kahoy at bituin;
you have a right to be here.
May karapatan kang dito’y manatili.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
At kahit malinaw man o hindi sa iyo,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
walang alinlangan ang sandaigdigan ay patuloy na iinog.

Therefore be at peace with God,
Kaya nga sikaping makamit ang kapayapaan sa Diyos,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
anuman ang iyong pagkakilala sa Kanya sa iyong isipan.
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
at kahit anuman ang iyong mga pasanin at mga inaasam,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
sa maingay na pagkalito ng buhay panatilihin ang kapayapaan sa kalooban.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
Kasama ang lahat ng pagkukunwari, pagdurusa at mga nawasak na pangarap,
it is still a beautiful world.
ito'y isa pa ring daigdig na maganda.
Be cheerful.
Maging masaya
Strive to be happy.
Magpunyaging lumigaya.

A Forwarded Message: What Happens in Heaven?

A Forwarded Message: What Happens in Heaven?

I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, 'This is the Receiving Section.
Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received.'

I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on
voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section..

The angel then said to me, 'This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the
people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them... 'I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. 'This is the Acknowledgment Section,' my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed 'How is it that there is no work going on here?' I asked.

'So sad,' the angel sighed. 'After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments
..'

'How does one acknowledge God's blessings?' I asked.

'Simple,' the angel answered. Just say, 'Thank you, Lord.'

'What blessings should they acknowledge?' I asked.

'If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy .'

'And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity.'

'If you woke up this morning with more health than illness
... you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day .'

'If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or
the pangs of starvation .... you are ahead of 700 million people in the world.'

'If you can attend a church without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world.
'

'If your parents are still alive and still married
....you are very rare .'

'If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you're unique to all those in doubt and despair.'

Okay, what now? How can I start? If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you as very special and you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.

Have a good day, count your blessings!!!

L. P. Gratacap and a house I almost bought

Louis P. Gratacap

Before I bought the glorious "Good Prospect" I now live in, I saw several other properties. All were too expensive, entailed the responsibility of being a landlord and in need of way too much repair. The only one I entertained any thought of maybe buying if I wanted to live in probably not so genteel poverty for the rest of my life was on the east side of Bement Avenue just north of Henderson Avenue.

View Larger Map

It's a huge, beautiful 19th century home. It was divided into several units and has an amazing front lawn. Unfortunately, it also had a beautiful side yard that wasn't for sale and had already been subdivided and plans submitted to and accepted by the City's Department of Buildings. You can see the right of two homes that have been subsequently built on that lot.

The imminence of those coming houses right up along the house in question meant there was no way I was going to beggar myself in order to have neighbors looking in my kitchen.

Louis P. Gratacap home - 1924 - circled in red

A recent map tour showed it had belonged to one L.P. Gratacap. An odd sounding name, I immediately googled it and, quickly enough I found out who he was.

Born in Gowanus,New York, Louis P. Gatacarp was the curator of the New York Mineralogical Club and the mineralogy curator at the Museum of Natural History as well. He died, unexpectedly, in 1917 at the age of 67.

Today his once lovely house sits surrounded too closely by newer homes. Still, it stands as reminder of less crowded times on the Island.

Gossip Girl Style To Your Home

Gossip Girl works as a fashion inspiration to many. Now InStyle helps us to peek to the gorgeus house of the van der Woodsen!

The home office and living room are both very simple, but colorful. And of course formal as it's supposed to be in the Upper East Side.

Serena's bedroom is a nice mix of classic and new items.

 Take a closer look with Gossip Girl set tour.

A Song with Universal Theme - Heal the World

This song is simply awesome... Heal the World!!! This song, which was my personal choice, was sung by our school choir in lieu of the United Nations celebration for 2010.

Heal the World
(lyrics)
Narrated:
Think about the generations and to say we want to make it a better
world for our children and our children's children. So that they know
it's a better world for them; and think if they can make it a better
place.

There's a place in your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could be much
Brighter than tomorrow.
And if you really try
You'll find there's no need to cry
In this place you'll feel
There's no hurt or sorrow.
There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space, make a better place.

Chorus:
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

If you want to know why
There's a love that cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares for joyful giving.
If we try we shall see
In this bliss we cannot feel
Fear or dread
We stop existing and start living
Then it feels that always
Love's enough for us growing
Make a better world, make a better world.

Chorus:
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race.
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

Bridge:
And the dream we would conceived in
Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify it's soul
Though it's plain to see, this world is heavenly
Be God's glow.

We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel
You are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we'll cry happy tears
See the nations turn
Their swords into plowshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space to make a better place.

Chorus:
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

Refrain (2x)

There are people dying if you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me.
There are people dying if you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me.

You and for me / Make a better place
You and for me / Make a better place
You and for me / Make a better place
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children
You and for me / Heal the world we live in

My Neighborhood - Cottage Hill

New Brighton around Hamilton Park - 1874

Hamilton Park detail - 1874 - Pritchard House circled in red

Hamilton Park - 1917 Here the Pritchard House is owned by Bertha K. Baker. The only reference I could find regarding her was her membership on the board of the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences from 1907.

I've written at length in the past about Hamilton Park and shown some of the houses that stand where it once stood. Recently my ongoing excavations of the NYPL Digital Collection brought me to this beautiful 1874 map of the HP environs.

I was amazed at the difference in a mere 43 years. The open lawns and gardens of the original Hamilton Park estates and "cottages" are gone by 1917. Some of the original homes are still there (like the Pritchard House at 66 Harvard which remains even today) but their property is greatly depleted and they are coming to be surrounded by newer, smaller homes.

View Larger Map

66 Harvard Avenue - Pritchard House - the wooded back yard on the house's west side used to be a lawn looking out over at the fields and farms of New Jersey. Today its enclosed with a giant hedge and overgrown.

The difference between 1917 and 2010 is less noticeable. The big estates were already broken up in 1917. There were new homes built, but aside from the large estate of Domenico Rorengo (no reference found) and several other larger houses on Buchanan Avenue, any tear downs aren't immediately apparent. I guess most of the cottages came down in that 1874-1917 period.

Hamilton Park - 2010

This is a closeup of the Stebbins property at the north of the Hamilton Park development property. HG Stebbins was a War Democrat, congressman and later the president of the NY Stock Exchange. His estate, which I don't presently have a picture of, was described as castlelike and crenelated. By 1917 it was all gone, as were many of the neighboring mansions to the north along Richmond Terrace.

As usual Forgotten New York has already covered the neighborhood and provided more and much better pictures than I've ever put up. Thanks for making me feel small ;)

So what is all about this musical piece?

Pachelbel's Canon is also known as Canon in D major. This musical piece is the most famous piece of music by German composer Johann Pachelbel. It was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gique in the same key.

Like most other works by Pachelbel and other pre-1700 composers, the Canon remained forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered only in the 20th century. Several decades after it was first published in 1919, the piece became extremely popular, and today it is frequently played at weddings and included on classical music compilations, along with other famous Baroque pieces such as Air on the G String by Johann Sebastian Bach.
