The magnificent Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, located on the European side of Bosphorus, was the primary administrative center of the Ottoman Empire 48 years. Construction of the palace started in 1843 and was completed in 1856. The cost of the construction of this elegant building is equivalent to 35 tonnes of gold. The palace, with an area of 45,000 m², used 14 tonnes of gold in the form of gold leaf to gild the ceilings.
