Sandwich Class Housing Scheme: A Good Solution for Places With Limited Land

Housing shortage is one of the biggest problems of the world due to the fast growing population. Countries with limited land area but have large population are having problem on how to provide housing to their populace.

In Hong Kong, one housing project that they came up with to resolve housing shortage is the Sandwich Class Housing Scheme. This scheme by the Hong Kong Housing Society or HKHS was intended for building apartments for middle-income families. Over 12,000 units were built since the project started in the 1990s.

1.) Choi Hung Estate




Choi Hung Estate is an award winning housing project located in the Wong Tai Sin District of Kowloon. This Sandwich Class Housing Scheme received a Silver Medal from Hong Kong Institute of Architects Annual Awards.

2.) Chevalier Garden




Chevalier Garden is a Sandwich Class Housing Scheme located in Ma On Shan, next to MTR Tai Shui Hang Station. This housing project was jointly developed by the Chevalier Group and Hong Kong Housing Authority.  In total, it has built 17 blocks.

3.) Yue On Court




Yue On Court is a housing project located in Ap Lei Chau, near Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter and Lei Tung Estate. This Sandwich Class Housing Scheme comprises 7 Cruciform blocks of 35 stories.

4.) Cheung Wang Estate



This Sandwich Class Housing Scheme is known as Cheung Wang Estate. It is situated in Liu To on Tsing Yi Island, Hong Kong. This housing project was constructed on the hilly site of Tsing Yan Temporary Housing Area. The estate is consists of seven high-rise blocks of flats, with 4,273 flats.

5.) Tivoli Garden



Tivoli Garden was Hong Kong Housing Society’s first development under the Sandwich Class Housing Scheme. This housing estate, which is located in Tsing Yi, was completed in 1995. Tivoli Garden comprises four blocks and a total of 1,024 apartments.

6.) Kam Fung Court



Kam Fung Court is a unique Sandwich Class Housing Scheme because it was built on the reclaimed land along Tide Cove shoreline. This housing estate in Ma On Shan, which was constructed in 1996, has a total of 9 blocks.

7.) Kam Tai Court



Kam Tai Court is another Sandwich Class Housing Scheme located in Ma On Shan. Like the Kam Tai Court, it was also built on the reclaimed land along Tide Cove shoreline near MTR Tai Shui Hang Station. This housing estate has completed a total of 12 blocks in 2000.

8.) Kam Ying Court



Kam Ying Court is a Sandwich Class Housing Scheme built in 1991 at a hill known as Ma On Rerrance or Saddle Ridge Terrace. This housing estate has a total of 10 blocks.

9.) Highland Park



This Sandwich Class Housing Scheme called Highland Park is a project of Hong Kong Housing Society or HKHS. It was constructed at the mid-level of Lai King Hill, Kwai Chung. This housing estate was completed in 1999 and has a total of 6 blocks with 1,496 flats.

10.) Kin Ming Estate



Kin Ming Estate is a Sandwich Class Housing Scheme in Hong Kong. It was completed in 2003 and is the eighth public housing estate. This housing estate is consists of 10 housing blocks.

11.) Sui Wo Court



Sui Wo Court is a housing project located in Sha Tin, Hongkong. It was built on a mountain above Wo Che and east of Fo Tan in the northwest of Sha Tin. You can view the scenery of Sha Tin and Tolo Harbor from this award winning housing project.
